tonight i was jonesing for something delicious and hearty, something healthy for me, too. i came upon this recipe, a risotto remake, through active.com, since i sometimes like to call myself a runner. the dish was flavorful and, as i mentioned, quite hearty. it makes a very large potful, so you will have plenty for your family or enough for leftovers all week long. i served mine with pork tenderloin, a great pairing to round out this meal. enjoy!
the porter beer bar – atlanta, ga
hipsters unite! because NRW this week took us on an adventure to bohemian little five points (l5p for shorthand), just east of the city, to experience everything cozy, cramped, and welcoming about the porter beer bar.
kitty turns 26!
i met kiley jo carole (aka kitty) in college at the university of georgia. we were both in the redcoat marching band, she on the flagline and i on the mellophone. we lived together on penny drive our senior year in athens and have been best friends ever since. this past week she turned 26 and invited us to celebrate with her at einstein’s, an innovative local establishment in the heart of midtown. read on to find out just how much fun we had!
right place, right time
“today i will trust that the events occurring in my life are not random. my experiences aren’t mistakes, and the Universe, my God, and life are not picking on me. i’m going through exactly what i need to go through to learn something valuable – something that will prepare me for the joy and love i’m seeking.”

as you may already know, i love music. i love everything about it. the concerts, the videos, the cd’s (yes, i do still buy compact discs). i grew up playing piano and french horn, both of which i never mastered but enjoyed to the fullest. i do not own a piano, because where would i put it in my cozy condo? and i do not own a french horn, because, well, because i’m not a professional musician. so, how was i to satisfy my thirst for some kind of personal musical talent? my friend nathan was quick to swoop in and provide the answer: a guitar! he owned a couple and played himself and was thrilled at the idea of having someone with which he could share this hobby. like most times, i didn’t need a whole lot of convincing.
good food and good laughs
my long-time family friend gregory has been in town over the past month for audit work here in buckhead. when he isn’t busy balancing accounts, he joins us in our evening adventures around the city. most recently, we journeyed to the neighborhood of virginia highlands for a night of comedy with postmodern collapse at the warren city club.

like most of america, i spent last sunday afternoon cleaning house and preparing appetizers for my friends. it was super bowl sunday! what better excuse to get together, eat unhealthily, and drink? i hosted a quaint party of ten at my condo and served up some pretty killer food. the menu included buffalo chicken dip, spinach and artichoke dip, pimento cheese, chicken wings, and jalapeno poppers. all homemade. that’s right. i slaved away in my little kitchen for three straight hours to get these prepped, mixed, and plated. i truly do like to think of myself as the hostess with the mostess.
poof!
i found this lovely little ottoman, poof, perch, settee, seat-thing last weekend and just had to have it. my old orange footstool was much too worn. it was time for a replacement.
i think i love
many moons ago i discovered the british singer and songwriter jamie cullum in a birmingham best buy aisle. he is hands-down, without a doubt, my favorite artist. one of the tracks from his album pursuit is everything a love song could be: “i think i love.” him and the piano. mm. here are the lyrics for you to enjoy yourself. and while you’re at it, why not give it a listen, too?
red velvet cupcakes
today is my co-worker ohhee’s last day with the company. she is moving on to a new and exciting beginning with her fiancé sam in los angeles, california. she is certainly going to be missed, so in bittersweet honor of her departure today, i specially made her requested red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.
the cake batter is delicious, as is the frosting. the recipe yields 30 cupcakes, so i might recommend doubling the frosting so that they can be generously topped. enjoy!
