salt lake city – day 1

we woke friday morning to a sliver of sunlight sneaking in through the curtains.  we were in luck with beautiful weather that weekend, a great thing considering there was snow back home in atlanta.  sorry, folks!

we freshened up in the suite and rode the elevator down to the lobby.  we had some ideas of where to go and what to do, but we swung by the front desk for a little direction.  we ended up chatting with geoff for about twenty minutes as he gave us the inside scoop of salt lake.  he even helped us out with a local city map!

after taking up plenty of his time, geoff wished us well as we started out into the morning, heading east on 600 south and then hanging a left onto main.  our destination was apple spice cafe and bakery for some sustenance, and after pushing through the revolving doors and riding the escalator to the second floor, there we were.  the restaurant was completely empty, but seeing as how it’s located in the wells fargo business building, i guess that makes sense that time of day.

we were warmly greeted by the cashier as we browsed the menu.  but, shoot!  we had just missed breakfast by about ten minutes.  whoops!  i guess we’ll be eating an early lunch then!  we stared down the menu a few minutes more, for we’d both been looking forward to a hot plate of eggs and a mug of coffee.  oh well.  part of being spontaneous is about being flexible, so we just rolled with it.

kyle had the soup and sandwich pairing.  the tomato basil soup was fresh and perfectly warmed when it was served.  he gladly dipped into it the half ham sandwich, a pretzel roll topped with cured ham, havarti cheese, greenleaf lettuce, and their signature sauce.  it was a solid meal, not too filling but not too light.

i also went with a combination meal because it’s not often a half sandwich/half salad plate steers me wrong.  per the cashier’s recommendation, i tried the pomegranate salad.  at first it sounded a little too summery, but seeing as how it was nearly 50 degrees and gorgeous outside, it actually seemed quite appropriate.  the half size serving was very generous and very flavorful.  the poppyseed dressing was light and slightly tangy, complementing the pomegranate seeds, roasted turkey, and candied pecans nicely.  i scarfed it down quickly.

next up was the blt santa fe.  i love blt’s, and with sprouts, avocado, and bbq ranch, it looked like it could be a winner.  unfortunately, it didn’t wow me like i thought it would.  i liked each ingredient on there, but altogether it wasn’t my favorite.

as we munched away our meals, we basked in the bright blue skies and welcoming temperature.  the sun warmed by back as we dined on their patio, a pleasant start to what would be a truly great day.

oh, 2014

i know facebook has this whole “year in review” thing going on, but this post?  this post is going to be much more exciting!  oodles of stuff happened in 2014 for me, and i am going to give you the ultra recap you never knew you needed but have been dying to read.

first things first of 2014, i started this blog!  it began on a whim one dreary january morning when i was in starbucks, and it has been the best thing i have done for myself in a long time.  you guys, my loyal readers, inspire me to keep it up and give you guys an insight into my world.  thank you for the encouragement and loyalty!

thanksgiving casserole

to all my fellow americans and thanksgiving-celebrators out there, happy turkey day!  let’s give thanks for days off from work and no alarm clocks and good food and tradition.  let’s also give thanks for the family and friends we can see today, while also keeping in our memories those who are no longer with us or cannot be with us.

clark and i came home to birmingham tuesday night, and as they always say, there truly is no place like home.  our childhood is here, our past was created here, and i will gladly return to suburbia nearly any day of the year.  it continues to amaze me that although my life is bustling with adventure and activity, i sometimes crave and cannot get enough of a bit of a slowdown, to ensure that i do not let the most cherished people and moments pass me by.

this thanksgiving is full of pajamas and tradition as always, but we tried something new with our grandmother gaga’s breakfast casserole.  my mom had uncovered this dish in her recipe box, and although it’d been years since she probably received it, there was no question that it was penned in gaga’s handwriting.

ingredients

6 eggs

2 cups milk

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon dry mustard

4 slices bread (cubed)

*we just used a loaf of french bread and ripped it up.  keeps you form having to dirty up a knife and cutting board.  plus, it looks cool and rustic when you rip up bread.

1 pound sausage, hot or mild

*we had some frozen, fully-cooked sausage patties that we just plopped right on top.  worked perfectly!  but, if you prefer to cook and crumble your own sausage, be my guest.

1 cup grated cheddar cheese

*i highly recommend you use at least 2 cups of cheese.  1 cup looked so wimpy, so i said, “to heck with one cup!”  it was a very good choice.

cook sausage and drain.

beat eggs.

add salt, mustard, and milk.  then get an action shot of the tori, because who doesn’t love to be photographed in their pajamas?

in a greased baking dish (a glass 9 x 13 should do you just fine), layer the bread, sausage, and cheese.  ooh, baby, that’s the stuff.

pour milk mixture over the top and refrigerate overnight.  bake at 350 degrees fahrenheit for 45 minutes or until set.

eat with a fork, but make sure it’s just like milo is doing here, with a side bite, or else it won’t taste the same!

some of my plans fell through this evening (which seemed to be continuing the weekend trend…), so when clark got back home from auburn, i easily persuaded him to go try gypsy kitchen in the buckhead atlanta area for dinner.  i love going out to eat with clark because he’s always up for it and is usually interested in trying a new place with me.  gypsy kitchen had opened back in mid-october, and after driving by it nearly everyday and seeing it pop up on my facebook newsfeed, it was time we see what it is all about for ourselves.

we are #andrichheavy

okay, folks, i know things had been quiet on the blogging front from me for the past couple of weeks, but i have good reason:  my brother kyle and kari got married last week at the first southern andrich wedding!  we had been busy bees in those days just beforehand, and when all was said and done, everything was worth the effort.

out-of-town guests started to arrive on thursday, and so began the #andrichheavy invasion.  so, what is this #andrichheavy hashtag of which we speak?  well, we had a lot of family and friends from the andrich side of things at the weekend festivities, so we coined it all as being #andrichheavy.  the words were spoken, and that was all she wrote.  every post and tweet and instagram picture were tagged with #andrichheavy, and we could not have loved it more.

the rehearsal dinner was a blast at the yellow house up in roswell.  so much southern food, plenty of beer and wine, and lots of laughing as we roasted the groom and played a few ditties for the happy couple.  as i have been told, i was quite the tipsy hostess all night, and i would not have expected anything less.

now, after months of planning and a whirlwind weekend of activity, we have a new addition to the #andrichheavy clan, miss kari.  kari and i met each other in college through the redcoat marching band.  she and kyle began dating our sophomore year, and it wasn’t before too long we all knew something really special was there.  over the years, kari has slowly inducted herself into the andrich family, counting herself lucky getting to meet them in waves rather than all at once.  i’ve been told we can be a bit to handle…

the october weather was cooperative and gorgeous, with crisp and untainted clarity in the air.  the wedding party looked sharp, and the guests were glamorous as well for the evening event.  you could not have asked for a more perfect setting.

after a teary-eyed ceremony, the real fun began as we danced and drank the night away at the roswell mill club.  glow sticks and tunes carried us into the cool autumn night, keeping us close to a sweet event of love and laughter.

as i drove into the office monday morning, i realized i was crashing hard, physically and emotionally.  my body was exhausted from the weekend’s events, and it seemed my heart was just as sore.  i was overjoyed to have our loved ones in a single place to celebrate such a wonderful step in life, but watching them all leave on marta trains and delta planes left a bitter taste in my mouth.  i was in a glass case of emotion for nearly four days straight, and now i’ve been ripped back into reality.  ah, such a harsh jolt!  when you feel things as fully and strongly like i do, it can all seem like a big wave sweeping down, no matter the occasion.  i guess we’ll just have to plan our next gathering soon!  who’s up next?

so, check this out, mis amigos.  last weekend our uncle craig was in atlanta before taking a whirlwind tour of the southeast for some client visits.  we got to spend some fun time with him as we gave him the local tour of the city, and considering he had never been here, it was great getting to show him around town.

of the many fun things we got to do while he was here, one of them was grabbing brunch at sun in my belly before he had to hit the road for the carolinas.  uncle craig is from the fair city of san pedro, california in southern los angeles, so we just couldn’t pass up the chance to show him how the south does food.

brian, a bride, and a moh

yesterday was so fun-filled and enjoyable that i just need to tell you all about it!  i first started off the lovely morning with my cousin brian.  he was in town from san francisco this weekend for kyle’s bachelor party, and in an effort to not crash the events, he and i met up for an early breakfast before their festivities geared up for the day.  i picked him up from his rented loft in downtown atlanta, and then we zoomed off towards memorial.  as we pulled up to ria’s bluebird café, we sadly realized that it wasn’t open.

“but the web site said they were open beginning at eight o’clock saturday mornings!?”

i know, i know.  it’s heartbreaking!  for this little place looked quite original and quirky, just what we were craving.  well, maybe next time?  maybe…

brian quickly hopped on foursquare and read aloud some other recommendations.  “this place highland bakery has an even higher score than ria’s.”

“we can definitely go there!” i assured him.  “it should just be right down the road.”

even though it was quite early in the day, there were plenty of folks already at their tables on the sidewalk.  the sun was beginning to peek up over the horizon with its warm rays, so we opted to eat inside instead.  it was a fine choice to dine indoors, for we were perfectly placed to visit and enjoy the atmosphere.

brian is one of the coolest people i know but is someone with whom i never get to spend enough time.  considering he spent his childhood in san pedro, moved to new york for a few years, and is now in northern california, you can see how it would be hard to get together.  thanks to more frequent family events and reunions, though, we’ve been pretty good about seeing each other at least once a year.  ah, he’s just so cool that it still isn’t enough!

our genial waitress brought the coffees and between sips, brian and i caught up on anything and everything.  his job at apple is going well, he loves his new apartment, and he is stoked for the wedding in october.  he’s one of the groomsmen for kyle, and you can bet he will be tearing up the dance floor at the reception.  brian definitely has a wild side, and we’ll see just how far it is unleashed next month.

per foursquare’s recommendation, brian ordered the fried chicken benedict.  he had mentioned he didn’t want anything too heavy, but i think this plate weighed a good bit.  those little fried tenders were smothered in a jalapeno cheddar cheese sauce that looked unreal.  brian said the dish certainly lived up to its hype.

i really didn’t know what i was in the mood to eat that morning, but the sweet potato pancake caught my eye, and i figured that it would be quite delicious with my café au lait.  first, the café au lait was very well made.  it didn’t need any sugar or cream, and that, in my opinion, means you’ve got a great mug of coffee in your thirsty little hands.  the pancake was dense and sweet and even more delicious with the caramelized brown sugar butter; and the side of bacon was thick and crispy.  sometimes i like chewy bacon, but this crispy serving of pig was a great choice.

our time together was coming to a close, as i had to meet up with some peeps around ten for an alumni event.  it had been so wonderful to catch up with brian, and it makes  my heart ache that i only get to see him every now and then.  i suppose i’ll just have to make it out to san fran sometime soon.  challenge accepted!

down on the plains

this past weekend, the whole family bustled down to auburn, al to celebrate clark’s graduation with his master of accountancy from the raymond j. harbert college of business.  he’s spent the last five years as a tiger, passing his classes with flying colors and even acing his cpa exams.  such a smarty pants!  we are incredibly proud of him, and me?  i’m even more excited because he’ll be moving in with me next month!  yay, roomie!  all three kids of us in one city?  oh, the magic!

pictures were a must, so we busted out the cameras and retreated inside the school building to escape the humidity.  it could have been much warmer out, but hey, it’s still summer in the south, so you know it’s going to be hot.

after snapping our dozens of photos, we had a little bit of time before the ceremony started.  we strolled on over to momma goldberg’s deli for a quick snack, and it was a fantastic idea.  clark has loved momma g’s as long as i can remember, and i first tried it when they finally built one up in birmingham.  the sandwiches are just the right size, not too heavy.  but what is it that makes this place so famous?  i’d say it’s the momma’s nachos.  they are doritos chips covered in pepper jack cheese and jalapeno peppers.  oooooh, yes.  i know you’re drooling like i am.  it’s easy to eat a whole basket of them yourself!

a couple hours later, we were applauding and hugging and congratulating clark upon his final graduation…at least for now!  we’re just so darn proud of him.  to celebrate, we dined at acre off glenn avenue and had a fabulous dinner together.  see just how fabulous we thought it was!

after dinner mom and dad hopped in the hyundai and headed back home.  as for us kids?  we were ready for the rest of the night!  we needed to keep this fun going.  but first?  first we needed to recharge at the hotel before wrecking havoc around town.  the hilton garden inn was quite accommodating, and after a quick nap, we washed up, called up that tiger taxi, and headed to downtown auburn.

our one and only stop that night was a place i’d heard stories of, a place that i’ve heard is so much fun, you have to go there when you are visiting.  of which place do i speak?  skybar.  yes, ladies and gentlemen, we went to skybar and had a stellar time.  the weather was cool and comfortable, the drinks were cheap and strong, and the place wasn’t too rowdy.  it was actually quite relaxing as we lounged in the chairs on the upper patio.

after enough people watching, clark took us on a tour of the rest of skybar.  we weaved through the hallways and dumped right into the boom boom room.  now, this room of skybar is infamous, as in it is a place where folks get sloppy and more intoxicated as the night goes on.  i was expecting a small room for some reason, but it was humongous!  there was a huge dance floor and a spacious stage for the live band that was playing (they had just finished up “springsteen” by eric church, one of my favorites!).  it’s the kind of place where you come to just have a good ‘ole time, and you can bet that southern college kids know how to do just that.  but one of the best moments?  it was when we were just walking out of the boom boom room and saw this:  a vending machine with not only traditional snacks and candies, but cigarettes and mints and koozies, too.  what more could you want!?

we were getting the late night munchies, so after catching a cab back to the hotel, we drove around town trying to find any fast food restaurant that might be open this late in the evening.  mcdonald’s?  nope.  steak’n’shake?  unfortunately, not.  checkers?!  no luck.  so, we took a last chance, we took a last chance on taco bell, and it was open!  we managed to order about thirty dollars worth of food, and then we so politely ate every single bite.  i confess right now, to all of you, that taco bell is some of the best late-night food out there.

we slept quite soundly that night/morning and woke to rumbling stomachs.  more food!  clark had made reservations for us at the hound, so we packed up and headed in that direction.  clark and i had been here last fall when i visited, and upon arrival, i remembered how much i had liked it that first time.

we were a little early for our table, so we squeezed through the tables to the mama mocha coffee emporium that is connected to the hound.  after walking in and adjusting to the bright sunshine pouring in through the windows, i was giddy with delight.  this place was so cute!  it was industrious and honest and simple.  clark was smiling as he asked, “do you like it, kels?”  of course i did!  it’s the kind of coffee shop that i wish was were more prevalent in atlanta.

the baristas kindly welcomed us and got to making our drinks.  clark had iced coffee, kari had a hazelnut latte, and i had my café au lait.  kyle had a pot of french press once we got to the table, and i think it’s safe to say that we all really enjoyed our coffees.

i couldn’t help but peruse the merchandise stand before we left to eat, and to no surprise, i ended up with a souvenir to take home with me.  although the actual mug itself is your standard mason jar, it’s the beautifully crafted leather holder that makes it so special.  the holder is courtesy of loyal stricklin, a leather goods company based in opelika, a city just east of auburn.  the quality is impeccable, and the detailing and stamping is quite stunning.  i was thrilled to drink my fancy café au lait with it, and i have loved using it here at home as well.

our table was ready, and we were ready to eat.  we didn’t waste much time with the menu and nearly ordered right as our waiter brought us our water glasses.  the menu here is short and sweet, and that’s just the intention of the hound.  we started out with an order of the pig candy per mallory’s recommendation, and it was a sweet treat to start the meal.  kyle described its taste as “meaty cinnamon toast crunch.”  and you know?  i don’t think he’s too far off.  i only wish those little slices were bigger, much bigger!  you can never have enough bacon.

the hound is a great spot for a couple’s brunch or a family’s meal.  they’ve got smaller tables for a more intimate setting and long tabletops and benches for a crowd.  even though it’s a large space, it isn’t too loud, which we all know i certainly appreciate.  the four of us had a great time discussing the future and the things to come, while also telling childhood tales of mischief and imagination.  such a good thing, to have family so near.

our meals arrived before not too long, and then our table got quiet.  kari ate nearly all of the granola french toast she had, and i don’t blame her because it looked quite savory.  kyle was impressed by the redneck benedict.  clark really liked the spicy and flavorful juevos houndcheros.  i loved the biscuits and gravy.  the biscuits were clearly homemade, the gravy was thick, and the sausage was a little spicy and mouthwatering.  i could have used a spoon to lick up that last little bit i left in the bowl!

we paid our checks, washed up, and moseyed, quite slowly, out to the cars.  we were full!  it was the perfect ending to a perfect weekend with family, and i could not be more thankful that we are all so close.  i count myself quite lucky to be surrounded by folks such as these.

“is this place farm-to-table?” kari asked as i passed the car keys to the valet.  “ha!  you crack me up!”  we were in auburn this past weekend to celebrate clark’s graduation with his masters of accountancy (we’re so proud!), but more on that later.

once the ceremony ended, we made the short drive to acre off east glenn avenue.  i was instantly excited as we drove up and approached the restaurant.  isn’t it just beautiful?

an american weekend

happy birthday, america!  and let’s give a quick thanks that this year’s anniversary was on a friday.  hellooooo, three-day weekend!

we started the party this year with the 45th annual running of the peachtree road race.  for most of us, this year was our fourth running, and it may have been the best one yet.  the weather was just gorgeous, and the spirit on the streets was high.  personally, i didn’t have the highest expectations for my race since injuring my back in april, but the energy from all the other runners was infectious.  i could do it!
