a couple of weeks ago, i had the brilliant idea for kyle and i to surprise kari, his fiancée, with an impromptu trip to piedmont park, where they would just happen upon a wonderfully laid out picnic with goodies for a fun-filled afternoon.  i was up quite late pulling everything together, but it was certainly worth it.  we spent a delightful day under a tree as the rain lightly fell down around us.  there was no shortage of people watching, giggling, story-telling, and good company.  and then when i thought it couldn’t get any better, we went to the dog park afterwards to watch all the pups romp around in the sun.  the perfect saturday afternoon with my favorite people.

the treats we dined on were so delicious that i knew i couldn’t keep them to myself!  the antipasto pasta salad and pineapple-mango salsa were delicious, but my favorites were the blackberry lemonade, lady marmalade chicken salad, and homemade rice krispy treats.

p.s.  my secret for the rice krispy treats is to double the marshmallow filling.  YES.  you know it’s what you want.  for the rice krispy treats, melt six tablespoons of butter on the stovetop.  add 16 ounces of mini marshmallows and melt.  stir until combined.  measure out six cups of rice krispy treats into a large mixing bowl, add the melted marshmallow mixture (say that five times fast), and fold with a spatula until incorporated.  mash mixture into a 9 x 13 pan that has been liberally coated with non-stick spray.  NOMS.

a while back my coworker andrew had sent me a link that provided an extensive list of new restaurant openings here in atlanta in 2014.  as we decide which restaurant to try next, i always consult this list to get some ideas.  panbury’s double crust pies was scheduled to open in april, so i reached out to the owner lauren duxbury to share with her about our group and my mission to discover delicious local spots.  she was quite excited about my inquiry and invited me to stop by for lunch one day.  well, last weekend provided the perfect opportunity with my mom and younger brother clark in town to discover just what kind of pies this place was serving.

***author’s note:  since the first visit last spring that prompted this post, bar meatball has unfortunately closed its doors.  do read on, though, to hear about the fond memories we’ll always keep of this local eatery!

this beautiful spring week we weaved our way to the neighborhood of virginia highlands for a lovely evening of dining at bar meatball.  yes, a restaurant centered around the meatball.  does it get more american than that?  kyle had heard about it from eater.com, so we took a chance on a newer place in town, and i’d say it was worth the try.

ah, buford highway.  or as we so affectionately call it, la buford.  miles of the finest citizens, dining, and shopping in all of metro atlanta.  okay, i’m leading you on.  those statements aren’t entirely true.  but!  la buford is a magical, yellow brick road of hidden gems like panahar, a restaurant that’s been serving bangladeshian cuisine since, well, i don’t know since when.  regardless, we went a little out of the ordinary this week with the largest turnout yet, 15 of us!  and i’m telling you, we filled nearly the entire restaurant and, without doubt, our stomachs.

panahar had been recommended by several of our regular attendees as the best, not just one of, indian restaurants in town.  many folks were quite excited when they heard this is where our next spot would be.  for me, though, the few times i have had indian-type cuisine in the past, i haven’t loved it.  i don’t much care for curry or very spicy creations, so many of your standard indian dishes are probably out of the running for me.  i was a bit hesitant to declare it the latest spot for nrw, but i said to myself, “hey, you’re older now.  perhaps your tastes have changed!”  was i right?  was i wrong?  well, it certainly was no applebee’s, if that’s what you’re asking yourself.

alison’s brother jay suggested a while back that we try out a place called 1kept because he knows the chef there.  after a few weeks of snowstorms, we finally were able to make it to south buckhead to give this place a try.  before we get to the real reviews, let me tell you, this place might be number one on my list so far.  the food was fantastic, the atmosphere was thoughtful, and the service was great.  read on to find out all the deets!

this week we hosted our largest nrw yet with 13 attendees at savage pizza!  yes, we ventured back to the neighborhood of little five points once again.  (you can also conveniently find them in decatur!)  this pizza joint is honest and inspired and has been a favorite of the locals since 1990.  did we like it as much as them though?  as one of our diners so simply put it, “it was pretty neat.”

my group of friends is starting to become co-mingled, folks from college and folks from work.  with that, we have different allegiances to our alma maters, the main rivalry being between uga and georgia tech.  a heated conversation came up at lunch last week over which town, atlanta or athens, is more fun to explore and enjoy.  so, to give both cities a fighting chance, we decided we would spend a saturday in atlanta and then a weekend in athens.  things started with a day in atlanta this past saturday.  let’s see how things shook out!
