san francisco – day 3

another early morning arrived for brian and me.  he wanted to get a good start so that he could leave work at a more reasonable hour for some friday fun, so we whisked out into the already windy day and took the truck over to 24th and folsom for brian’s favorite cup of coffee at philz.  he said this spot was his daily hangout once upon a time, so if it’s good enough for him, it’ll work for me, too!

when we walked into philz, i was instantly reminded of the east side jittery joe’s back in athens.  it’s artsy and eclectic, and i loved every ounce of it.

IMG_20150424_071755

it’s quite the menu they’ve got here, so i trusted brian to do the ordering for us both.  he got us each a small philtered soul, a lighter medium blend of hazelnut and chocolate.  um, yes, that sounds amazing!  we took our cups to-go and had our first sips out on the sidewalk.  although a little on the sweeter side, the coffee was flavorful, a lovely treat to wake us up at just a quarter past the seven o’clock hour.

gah, he's just the coolest!

gah, he’s just the coolest!

we then headed east on 24th to find dynamo donut shop.  my friend mike had heard good things about it, so i felt it was my personal duty to see if the fun was warranted.  this little place is actually a walk-up counter serving up homemade donuts and coffee.

i was in the mood for something chocoately, so i gladly let the cashier recommend the chocolate rose.  brian went for a saltier selection with the maple glazed bacon apple.  she popped them into a to-go bag for us so that brian and i could enjoy them in a nearby park.  we plopped ourselves on top of the artful sea serpent because that seemed the most obvious thing to do.

we decided that sharing the donuts was the perfect thing to do.  brian bit into the chocolate rose first, and his face said it all:  he really didn’t care for it.  whoops!  i took a taste to see if i agreed but found i felt differently.  i actually quite liked its bittersweet flavor and cakey texture.  brian did come around to admit after a few more tries that it wasn’t so bad after all.

IMG_20150424_073906

even though i was a fan of the chocolate rose, i might say the maple glazed bacon apple that brian picked out was pretty awesome.  the glaze was just the right thickness to coat the donut but not take away from the subtle and sweet syrupy-apple flavor.  oh, and let’s be honest, no breakfast is complete without bacon, right?  ah, yes, how american of me!

IMG_20150424_074052

it was about that hour for brian to head out to work, so he dropped me off back at cafe st. jorge.  i just couldn’t stay away!  i snuggled into the booth with a sesame bagel and organic cream cheese and wrote the morning away.  all of philz coffee went straight to my head and got me uber focused.  i knocked out a whole day and a half of san fran fun in a short couple of hours.  booyah!

san francisco – day 2

thursday morning honestly arrived a little too early for my liking.  although brian’s bed is extremely comfortable, a few more hours of shuteye really would have done wonders.  well, there’s no room for whiners on this vacation, so we were up and at it by 7:30 a.m.  an early day indeed!

brian was going to take the later bus to work so that we’d have a little morning time together.  our first destination of the day was cafe st. jorge for a little caffeine and munchies.  this place was all kinds of adorable, and i’m sure i embarrassed brian with all my question asking and picture taking.  hey, there comes a time when one must be a shameless blogger, and that time for me is now.  this type of coffee shop is right up my alley, and if i lived here, i bet it’s where i would go to write and read.

brian went for a large black coffee and i had a small cafe au lait.  it was a solid au lait, a good thing since it is my favorite coffee beverage.

my cousin is such a stud!

my cousin is such a stud!

for eats i had the banana bread.  i didn’t want anything too filling since i was planning to eat practically all day long.  i wish it had been a little more moist, but the flavors and density you come to expect from banana bread were definitely there.

'naner bread.

‘naner bread.

brian went with his usual in the small granola bowl.  it was the cutest and most homey bowl i’d ever seen in my life, and i’m lucky he let me have a couple bites.  the yogurt wasn’t overly sweet, and the homemade granola was stupid good.  the fruit was fresh, and everything together in a single spoonful made for a very tasty breakfast.

IMG_20150423_075124~2

we grabbed lids for our coffees and began our morning hike.  brian had warned me about the hills, but, yeah, i quickly felt out of shape, and i run half-marathons for goodness’ sakes!  slowly my layers were stripped as we continued upward towards the heavens.  all that was running through my head was miley cyrus’ hit “the climb.”  remember folks, it’s about the journey, not the destination.

brian promised me the effort would be worthwhile, and after we were atop the city, i realized he was absolutely right.  the view from this high up is just gorgeous, a sweeping scene of san francisco and all its neighborhoods.  the breeze was cooling, and the ultimate feeling of relaxation set in as we took in everything.  ah, thank goodness for vacation days!

san francisco – day 1

folks, it’s time this hard-working lady treated herself to a few days off from work.  where to, you ask?  well, if the title of this post isn’t a hint, i’m headed to san francisco.  yep!  a four and half hour delta flight brought me to this city on the bay for a long weekend to visit my cousin brian.  i know, how exciting!  he’s been living in this fair city for a little while now, and considering i’ve never spent time here, i figured a trip westward was in order.

IMG_20150422_171130~2

do i have much planned for my days in san fran?  not much besides a wine tour on saturday.  well, i take that back.  i plan to practically eat my way through the city.  i’ve promised myself i’ll do enough walking to justify the obscene amount of calories i’ll probably be consuming.  that order shouldn’t be too tall to keep since the weather in northern california is forecasted to be pretty gorgeous during my stay.  ah, thank you, mother nature, for your kindness!

but first, where does each cross-country journey begin?  an exhilarating flight across the nation, of course!  i hustled down to the airport this afternoon with my brand spankin’ new luggage (thanks to kari for helping me pick it out at tj maxx), left it at the baggage drop, and then patiently waited my turn in the security line.  i was a bit surprised by the number of fellow travelers this time in the middle of the week.  oh well, i was in no real rush, so i shuffled along and through like a good little guest.

after hitting the ladies’ room and filling my water bottle, i leisurely strolled on over to gate a24.  the gate attendants were getting ready to board first class, so i popped a squat and waited my turn.  i am a lazy boarder, so i usually just hop on at the end.  i mean, what’s the rush to squeeze yourself into a cramped airplane seat?  i always check my luggage since it’s free, so i don’t mind the later boarding.  plus, if you stick around the gate, you can be super touristy and take pictures of relatively boring and typical scenes.

isn’t this well-framed photo of my plane and jetway super interesting?

IMG_20150422_170759~2

and how about this one of the gate and all my fellow flyers?  we’ll be best friends long before touchdown in san fran!  oh, except for this lady on the right of the picture.  i’m sure she’d kill me if she knew i’d gotten this sweet shot of her white-washed jean backside.  hehe.

IMG_20150422_171656~2

oh, and here’s my personal favorite.  isn’t this delta sign just so picturesque with the fire hose totally photo bombing the entire thing?

IMG_20150422_172449

you didn’t think the simple act of boarding a plan could be this interesting, did you?  ah, just you wait!  i am a woman of many talents, one of them being the gift to make normally routine and bland life events highly entertaining.  i like to think i get it from my parents.  thanks, mom!  thanks, dad!

join the club!

i don’t like to call myself a fast food lover, but i think that would be a bit of a lie.  sometimes all i crave is some processed meats and salty potatoes to satisfy my hunger.  is there something so wrong with that?  if you say yes, then i bet you are only denying your own desire to find the nearest drive-thru for some temporary and unhealthy satisfaction.  i’m not sure there are many fast food establishments i’d pass up, but i’d almost drive any number of miles to find a mcdonald’s because, let’s face it, mcdonald’s is practically an international icon in its own right.  those golden arches are recognizable almost all over the world, and there’s always a small tug on my steering wheel whenever i pass by one on the road.

phillip and i were recently talking about eating (something we do often now that i think about it) and somehow mcdonald’s came up in the conversation.  i asked him what his favorite meal there was, and he said that he always gets the quarter pounder burger.  he asked the same question to me, and without much hesitation, i said the big mac.  now, chicken mcnuggets are in a close second, i promise, but the big mac is just so classic!  “you know,” he said, “I’ve never had a big mac myself.”

“WAT.”  i swear the world stopped for a second when he told me he’d never had the privilege of enjoying what is, quite possibly, the most well-known burger in all the land.  how can he never have had a taste of those two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun?  i know!  it’s almost blasphemous!

well, i have good news for you all.  last night phillip joined the big mac club, and it was some of the most fun i’ve had eating a meal.

first, the bag of heavenly goodness.

next, the box.  oh, how the anticipation built!

oooh, and there it is in all its glory!

and by glamour shot i mean grease shot…

have you ever seen someone so excited about a big mac?

my first big mac, captured in history!

IMG_1762

…and taking the plunge!

IMG_1763

phillip took his time to savor each bite and really review the flavor profile of this classic burger.  he loved the big mac sauce (basically thousand island) slathered on each beef patty.  the pickles and cheese were great toppings as well, and even though the big mac is big, it wasn’t too large for this hungry fellow.  he had brought me one also, and i scarfed mine down between breaths of air.  big macs are a guilty pleasure for me, and considering it had been months since i’d had one myself, i wasted no time in enjoying it.

although the quarter pounder may always be his favorite go-to, i suspect i’ve converted phillip with a new favorite.  thank you, mcdonald’s, for bringing a close couple even closer!

IMG_1764

so, phillip is now a member of the big mac club.  congratulations, dear!  however, another club that he had missed out on for a while but is now a proud member of is the michael kors club.  yes, i have corrupted him and am afraid there may be no turning back.  last weekend phillip did a little spring shopping for himself at macy’s, and you shouldn’t be surprised that i was happy to tag along.

after dressing him up in new shirts and pants in the fitting room, we headed down to the michael kors watch counter.  phillip had taken a look at their selection right when we walked in the mall but decided he wanted to do clothes first and then see how he was feeling.  fair enough.  when we got back to the jewelry case, he kindly asked colleen to let him try on the everest silver-tone watch again.  with his new outfit and puma sneakers on, the watch looked better than ever.  funny how that works, right?  this watch is modern and sleek while also being a beefy, eye-catching piece.  the two-tone blue and black dial is unique like the rubber wristband.  oh, and you want to know what made it an even better buy?  it was on sale, and he didn’t know it until he went to the checkout counter.  sometimes you find everything when you aren’t even looking for it.

smokebelly bbq – atlanta, ga

IMG_1727

last weekend was relaxing and beautiful down here in georgia, and i spent as much time of that perfect spring saturday outside as i could.  phillip came over to the condo where i was happily chatting with my neighbors chris and suzy and their sweet little pup shorty.  the trees in our courtyard were providing the perfect amount of shade, and the slight breeze kept us cool.  we cracked open some bud lights and caught up on the latest.  it’s wild how much you don’t see your neighbors when the colder months are here.  i felt like i hadn’t visited with those two in months!

as the early evening crept in, i could feel my stomach rumbling.  we weren’t in the mood to cook, so phillip and i were trying to figure out where we should go for dinner.  we knew we wanted to dine alfresco since it was such a gorgeous night, and with that must-have, chris and suzy were quick to recommend smokebelly bbq just down the street off east andrews.  i’d gotten their flyers and coupons in the mail after their grand opening but hadn’t yet given it a visit.  suzy was armed with several suggestions, and since i never turn down good bbq, we knew just where we’d be going.  her fingers were crossed that we would like it just as much as she did; considering she’d been back several times after first going with chris, it sounded like a pretty good bet.

a winning combination

okay, folks.  i know it’s been a ridiculous two weeks since my last post, but i’ve been giving myself the evenings off lately.  it’s nice to come home and not plug myself right back into my computer after sitting in front of it for eight hours straight.  so yes, i have been a bit selfish, but i assure you that i shall always return.  🙂

although fashion and beauty may not be the focus of my blog, i know that they’ve been the topics of conversation a little bit lately.  today’s post is no different, as i just have to tell you all about the new face care regimen i’ve got going.

several weeks back, sarah was in town for nrw at thai bua in town brookhaven, and after scarfing down platefuls of delicious sushi and pad thai, she joined me across the street at publix to pick up a few groceries.  i was in desperate need of facewash, so we headed to the skincare aisle.  i asked her if she had any recommendations, as i always tend to just go with something cheaper and store-brand.  she immediately replied “yes” and helped me find the acnedote face & body scrub by alba botanica.  she uses it on her face and body in the shower, so after making my purchase, i did the same.

i was startled when i plopped that first dollop out on my hand – this stuff is grainy and brown!  it threw me for a second, but then i rubbed it in my hands, washed my face, rinsed off, and patted dry.  after a month’s worth of time, i can give it the same rave review sarah has.  there’s no harsh chemical smell in this product even though it has the maximum strength 2% salicylic acid for a deep clean.  the ground walnut shell isn’t scratchy and doesn’t feel like you’re scraping off that first layer of sensitive facial skin.  it’s light and gentle enough that you can use it daily, just like me!  i liked it so much on my face that i started using it with my loofa while showering also.  i’m not sure how much of the effect is placebo, but i have received compliments on smoother skin.  how about that!

part of the credit for this healthier glow must also go to the alaffia fair trade african coconut oil my previous stylist karen suggested for me.  as she was trimming my bangs one day at the salon, i mentioned that i wanted to start using a moisturizer but didn’t really know where to start.  anything oily or thick was out of the question.  i didn’t need anything scented, just something that would get the job done.  without hesitation she recommended coconut oil.  “coconut oil?” i asked with a bit of curiosity.  i think i was confused because when i hear oil, i picture something a bit more liquidy, not necessarily something i’d use as a lotion, per say.  she assured me it would work wonders, so i took her advice and ran with it.  you can find this particular alaffia brand of coconut oil at whole foods, which is where i got mine.  for about nine bucks, you get a huge tub of the stuff, and i promise it is going to last you a while.  the texture is almost crisco-y, but i hesitate to say that because the thought of applying crisco directly to my face makes me want to be ill.  anyway, it’s kind of got that texture.  all you need to do is kind of scrape some out of there, place it in the palm of one hand, and then use the fingers from your other hand to kind of rub it around and melt it.  it’ll become more liquidy and you can then apply it to your face.  a little goes a long way here, so start out with a smaller portion; there is plenty in that jar if you need more.  this coconut oil isn’t heavy, but it does take a little bit to soak into the skin.  i usually only use it at night, but if i want to use it in the morning, i make sure i put it on about an hour before i apply any makeup, just to be safe.

wash and lotion

do i have a completely clear face these days?  not necessarily.  after all, i am a woman in her mid-20s, so there’s all sorts of hormones flying around.  however, i am seeing a more even skin tone overall, and i certainly can testify that my skin feels softer.  if you’re looking to give a new product a try, might a suggest either of these?

oh, and because you’re such a sweet and loyal reader, here are some flowers.  they were a gift from phillip, but i don’t think he’ll mind if i share them with you all.

the pinewood tippling room – decatur, ga

after finishing the publix half marathon and full marathon a couple sundays ago, you can bet we runners were ravenous.  we met up with everyone in the neighborhood of decatur at the pinewood tippling room, unexpectedly coming across the perfect restaurant review opportunity.

known by the locals as the pinewood, this spot is a cozy neighborhood bar serving up “extraordinary cocktails and reinterpreted regional fare.”  their space is clean without much fuss, and although they equally support what they call the high-class and “home-spun,” i felt a touch out of place in my running tights and sneakers.  the other customers were dressed to the nines, it seemed, after maybe just having left church service with their family and friends.  perhaps if i were coming on a different day i would have felt a little more comfortable.  maybe that’s why they seated us way in the back…?  nah, i don’t think so.  i think it had more to do with the fact that we were a party of 12 and that was where they had room.  i should have positioned myself on the other side of the table so that i could really take in the ambiance, for i was stuck facing a white-washed brick wall.  oh well!  good thing atmosphere is only one element of a restaurant, right?  sure!

although i probably needed a couple gallons of water to rehydrate my body, i didn’t wait a moment to order a mimosa.  something refreshing and crisp sounded like the perfect ticket, and these glasses were a great balance of orange juice and champagne.  cheers!

mimosas for everyone!

mimosas for everyone!

the pinewood closes at 2:30 p.m. on sundays, so we all had to somewhat hastily make our selections.  with a decently sized brunch menu, though, i don’t think it was hard for many of us.

fritz & his food

i don’t know about you all, but this work week has been a bit up and down.  we’ve got a big internal project that’s keeping us very busy.  meetings here, meetings there, meetings everywhere!  i was feeling a bit deflated yesterday afternoon following a training session, and as we walked back into our huddle room, greg said, “i’ve got a video that will cheer you up in no time.”  i settled in to take a watch and, oh sweet Jesus, i almost fell out of my chair when i watched it.  i get the giggles easily, so i was laughing for a while after it ended.

i don’t want to spoil the fun for you, so click here to see all the wonders of this sweet golden retriever fritz.  and without giving too much away, i’ll say the pizza slice clip is my favorite.  enjoy!

i was browsing imgur recently (which i am almost always doing, especially at the end of the day when i need something funny to cheer me up), and i came across a post about turning your handwriting into a font.  as it turns out, my coworkers kyle and greg also saw it, so the next day at the office we spent a little of our lunch break computerizing our handwriting.

there are some specific instructions you need to follow on the template (make sure you scan it with the proper grayscale), but after that you just have to write each number, letter, and/or symbol in its proper box and you’re set!  mine turned out pretty well (it helps if you complete the template with a thicker fine point pen, like a sharpie).  it’s pretty cool to type in your handwriting, right?  also, this “heartbeat song” has been stuck in my head all day, so i figured that chorus would work perfectly here.

FONTi do acknowledge that this is quite possibly the most geeky post i have done to date, but i share it with you all because i know you’ve been dying to see what my handwriting looks like!

oh, and so you can get it stuck in your head, too, here’s america’s sweetheart kelly clarkson.

can you run it, run it?

it’s that time of year, ladies and gentlemen.  race time!  with spring upon us, the city of atlanta comes alive as a running town, folks taking the park, sidewalks, and beltline wherever their feet may carry them.  well, this year a few of us joined in on the organized fun by running the publix half marathon and full marathon.

let me tell you now, nothing wakes you up like a 13.1- or 26.2-mile run early on a sunday morning, especially when it’s cooler and rainy.  yep, that’ll definitely do it.  i got to centennial olympic park a touch early (i don’t think arriving at 5:45 a.m. was totally necessary, but whatever), and i wish i could say i was feeling motivated.  the precipitation and temperature weren’t thrilling me, but at least the sight of the ferris wheel cheered me up a little bit.  hey, whatever it takes, right?

IMG_20150322_054213~2

i was accompanied by bank, liz, and behrle soon enough, and before i knew it, we were dropping off our bags at gear check and heading towards the start line.  i had debated greatly whether or not to take my sousa rain jacket, but that thing is all kinds of insulated, and even though it was cold at the moment, i guessed i might not need it once the running got started.

behrle trotted to corral d, bank found a spot in corral i, and i just kind of joined the end of the pack.  i mean, my time didn’t begin until i crossed the start line, so what was the rush?  i kid you not when i say there’s absolutely no rush in beginning a multi-hour run.  nope, not even a tiny bit!

i had run this course back in 2013 with mild success.  i hadn’t trained as well for that race, and my results suffered.  i had to walk the last three miles and ended up with a final time well over the three-hour mark.  although it’s still quite a feat, i wasn’t personally satisfied, so this year i was coming back with a vengeance, determined to show this course who’s boss.  or is it baus?

regardless, i began my race right after the seven o’clock hour and set off into the dark morning.  i like to keep myself at a steady pace, so i gladly let other runners pass me left and right.  my goal for this race was to run the entire thing and get done in under three hours.  i’ve done it before at my first half marathon in athens, and i wanted to prove to this one that i could do it again.
