boston – day 3

okay, day three, it is my last day in boston, so i need to make the most of it.  monday, do you think you can deliver?  good!  it sounds like you are up to the challenge.  the day’s not getting any longer, so let’s get started!

after a solid night of sleep, the city was ours for the taking.  as we strolled to the fields corner metro stop, we munched on homemade egg rolls that vinh’s mother had given us before we dashed out the door.  those things were crispy and warm and gone in no time.  the perfect snack to get our metabolisms going.

we grabbed our charlie tickets and stepped aboard the redline, northbound to alewife.  when i take public transportation in other cities, i always wonder if i look like a tourist.  was i blending in because i was being accompanied (well, more like chaperoned, let’s be honest) by a local?  um, probably not, especially since i was so chatty and upbeat for a monday.  something i noticed very quickly about bostonians is that while they are not necessarily rude, they aren’t really pleasant either, at least to strangers.  i found that my polite “excuse me’s” and “pardon me’s” went unnoticed and seemed to not be appreciated one bit.  this much is true of pedestrians and even more severe for drivers.  i’m convinced no one’s blinkers work and that lane stripes are more like guidelines than actual restrictions.  cars seem to have no regard for those on foot, and the reverse seems to be quite the same.  there was more than just once when i thought i might be nudged into an intersection and made to fear for my life.  as they say, you can take the girl out of the south, but you cannot take the southern hospitality out of the girl.  okay, so maybe it isn’t an actual saying, but right here from yours truly is a first-hand testimony.  tell me it counts for something!

boston – day 2

well, we had the grand idea of being go-getters this morning, hopping out of bed early to get the day started and to begin the exploring.  i’d say all that was pretty much shot considering vinh had a little bit of work to do and i didn’t wake up until nearly ten o’clock.  oh well!  that just means with all this extra sleep we got, we’d be energized for an action-packed sunday.  i know sunday is a day of rest, but when you’re in a new city and on vacation, sometimes you just cannot help yourself!

boston – day 1

mm, who doesn’t love an 8:45 flight on a saturday morning after a night of fireball jell-o shots at the boss’ holiday party?  ah, i knew i wasn’t the only one!  this morning my coworker vinh and i hopped aboard delta flight 104 and shut our eyes on the two and half hour trip up to boston.  we arrived a little early, were picked up by his brother-in-law, and whisked away to his childhood home.

vinh was born and raised in boston, attended tufts university, and often comes back to visit his hometown.  the neighborhood of dorchester is his stomping grounds, and it was a treat to get to see the town where he grew up and spent his younger days making memories. i’ve never been to boston, and a few months ago i heard the band the 1975 was touring in the states.  i was going to miss their atlanta show because i was out of town, but i saw they were going to be performing in boston.  well, that about sealed the deal for me.  i called up vinh and asked him if he’d like to go to the concert with me and show me around his city.  his agreement was nearly instant, and so my boston adventures began!

so much to do and so little time in which to do it!

so much to do and so little time in which to do it!

girls will be girls

as you may have already read, i found myself up in asheville, north carolina for the first time this past weekend for a few days of fun to celebrate kristen’s bachelorette-ness.  kristen and i were coworkers when i first started in software consulting back in 2010, and we have kept in touch since.  she is such a sweetheart with a beautiful smile, and i am thrilled to get to celebrate her and joe up in blue ridge in november.

but first!  we had to host a getaway for the bride, and you can bet we did it in style.  we all got a little shuteye after the trip north on friday evening and rolled out of bed saturday morning ready for a good time.  we freshened up, called our ubers, and headed into town.  we started with brunch/lunch at tupelo honey café.  well, it was a fantastic recommendation, and if you live near one and haven’t been, shame on you!  it’s a great spot and certainly worth the weekend wait.

we donned our sunglasses on that crisp and clear autumn day and took a right on broadway to head to wicked weed brewing off biltmore avenue.  my coworkers josh and philip highly recommended it, seeing as how they had spent several months up in this city for work.  even our waiter at tupelo honey said to give it a try, so with support like that, that’s where we went.

tupelo honey cafe – asheville, nc

tupelo_logo

this past weekend i trekked up 85 north, through traveler’s rest, and past the biltmore estates to the cozy town of asheville, north carolina.  it was kristen’s bachelorette weekend, and with eight high-energy, beautiful women in one house, you can bet we were ready to take on the town.

after a relaxing walk saturday morning, we boasted our best bourgeois mountain outfits and ubered into the city.  the first stop was brunch at tupelo honey café per many recommendations, so we filed in line with the rest of the locals.  well, we may not have looked like locals, but who cares!

a good looking bunch!

a good looking bunch!

tupelo honey café has become a bit of a national icon for creative southern foods with accolades from the new york times, southern living magazine, and the food network.  they strive to serve up spirited and inventive dishes that leave you satisfied, and i’m going to ruin the surprise for you right now and say that they certainly satisfied this group of very real and very hungry ladies.

down on the plains

this past weekend, the whole family bustled down to auburn, al to celebrate clark’s graduation with his master of accountancy from the raymond j. harbert college of business.  he’s spent the last five years as a tiger, passing his classes with flying colors and even acing his cpa exams.  such a smarty pants!  we are incredibly proud of him, and me?  i’m even more excited because he’ll be moving in with me next month!  yay, roomie!  all three kids of us in one city?  oh, the magic!

pictures were a must, so we busted out the cameras and retreated inside the school building to escape the humidity.  it could have been much warmer out, but hey, it’s still summer in the south, so you know it’s going to be hot.

after snapping our dozens of photos, we had a little bit of time before the ceremony started.  we strolled on over to momma goldberg’s deli for a quick snack, and it was a fantastic idea.  clark has loved momma g’s as long as i can remember, and i first tried it when they finally built one up in birmingham.  the sandwiches are just the right size, not too heavy.  but what is it that makes this place so famous?  i’d say it’s the momma’s nachos.  they are doritos chips covered in pepper jack cheese and jalapeno peppers.  oooooh, yes.  i know you’re drooling like i am.  it’s easy to eat a whole basket of them yourself!

mama's nachos.

momma’s nachos.

a couple hours later, we were applauding and hugging and congratulating clark upon his final graduation…at least for now!  we’re just so darn proud of him.  to celebrate, we dined at acre off glenn avenue and had a fabulous dinner together.  see just how fabulous we thought it was!

after dinner mom and dad hopped in the hyundai and headed back home.  as for us kids?  we were ready for the rest of the night!  we needed to keep this fun going.  but first?  first we needed to recharge at the hotel before wrecking havoc around town.  the hilton garden inn was quite accommodating, and after a quick nap, we washed up, called up that tiger taxi, and headed to downtown auburn.

our one and only stop that night was a place i’d heard stories of, a place that i’ve heard is so much fun, you have to go there when you are visiting.  of which place do i speak?  skybar.  yes, ladies and gentlemen, we went to skybar and had a stellar time.  the weather was cool and comfortable, the drinks were cheap and strong, and the place wasn’t too rowdy.  it was actually quite relaxing as we lounged in the chairs on the upper patio.

after enough people watching, clark took us on a tour of the rest of skybar.  we weaved through the hallways and dumped right into the boom boom room.  now, this room of skybar is infamous, as in it is a place where folks get sloppy and more intoxicated as the night goes on.  i was expecting a small room for some reason, but it was humongous!  there was a huge dance floor and a spacious stage for the live band that was playing (they had just finished up “springsteen” by eric church, one of my favorites!).  it’s the kind of place where you come to just have a good ‘ole time, and you can bet that southern college kids know how to do just that.  but one of the best moments?  it was when we were just walking out of the boom boom room and saw this:  a vending machine with not only traditional snacks and candies, but cigarettes and mints and koozies, too.  what more could you want!?

JACKPOT.

JACKPOT.

we were getting the late night munchies, so after catching a cab back to the hotel, we drove around town trying to find any fast food restaurant that might be open this late in the evening.  mcdonald’s?  nope.  steak’n’shake?  unfortunately, not.  checkers?!  no luck.  so, we took a last chance, we took a last chance on taco bell, and it was open!  we managed to order about thirty dollars worth of food, and then we so politely ate every single bite.  i confess right now, to all of you, that taco bell is some of the best late-night food out there.

fourth meal!

fourth meal!

we slept quite soundly that night/morning and woke to rumbling stomachs.  more food!  clark had made reservations for us at the hound, so we packed up and headed in that direction.  clark and i had been here last fall when i visited, and upon arrival, i remembered how much i had liked it that first time.

the hound.

the hound.

we were a little early for our table, so we squeezed through the tables to the mama mocha coffee emporium that is connected to the hound.  after walking in and adjusting to the bright sunshine pouring in through the windows, i was giddy with delight.  this place was so cute!  it was industrious and honest and simple.  clark was smiling as he asked, “do you like it, kels?”  of course i did!  it’s the kind of coffee shop that i wish was were more prevalent in atlanta.

the baristas kindly welcomed us and got to making our drinks.  clark had iced coffee, kari had a hazelnut latte, and i had my café au lait.  kyle had a pot of french press once we got to the table, and i think it’s safe to say that we all really enjoyed our coffees.

i couldn’t help but peruse the merchandise stand before we left to eat, and to no surprise, i ended up with a souvenir to take home with me.  although the actual mug itself is your standard mason jar, it’s the beautifully crafted leather holder that makes it so special.  the holder is courtesy of loyal stricklin, a leather goods company based in opelika, a city just east of auburn.  the quality is impeccable, and the detailing and stamping is quite stunning.  i was thrilled to drink my fancy café au lait with it, and i have loved using it here at home as well.

our table was ready, and we were ready to eat.  we didn’t waste much time with the menu and nearly ordered right as our waiter brought us our water glasses.  the menu here is short and sweet, and that’s just the intention of the hound.  we started out with an order of the pig candy per mallory’s recommendation, and it was a sweet treat to start the meal.  kyle described its taste as “meaty cinnamon toast crunch.”  and you know?  i don’t think he’s too far off.  i only wish those little slices were bigger, much bigger!  you can never have enough bacon.

pig candy.

the hound is a great spot for a couple’s brunch or a family’s meal.  they’ve got smaller tables for a more intimate setting and long tabletops and benches for a crowd.  even though it’s a large space, it isn’t too loud, which we all know i certainly appreciate.  the four of us had a great time discussing the future and the things to come, while also telling childhood tales of mischief and imagination.  such a good thing, to have family so near.

our meals arrived before not too long, and then our table got quiet.  kari ate nearly all of the granola french toast she had, and i don’t blame her because it looked quite savory.  kyle was impressed by the redneck benedict.  clark really liked the spicy and flavorful juevos houndcheros.  i loved the biscuits and gravy.  the biscuits were clearly homemade, the gravy was thick, and the sausage was a little spicy and mouthwatering.  i could have used a spoon to lick up that last little bit i left in the bowl!

we paid our checks, washed up, and moseyed, quite slowly, out to the cars.  we were full!  it was the perfect ending to a perfect weekend with family, and i could not be more thankful that we are all so close.  i count myself quite lucky to be surrounded by folks such as these.

wild about harry’s – dallas, tx

wild about harry's.

wild about harry’s.

i find myself on another visit to expansive dallas, tx.  the client beckons me by name!  ah, traveling.  a (mostly) wonderful perk of working in software consulting.  i will admit, i have visited many towns i would not have otherwise seen, so i shall count myself luckier than the average bear!

i am flying solo this week, so all the eating decisions are my own.  how fabulous!  i had heard of this place called wild about harry’s.  supposedly they’re known for their custard…?  i kid!  wild about harry’s is very well-known for their secret custard recipe and hot dogs.  let’s see how this southern lady liked it!

come fly with me

people on planes.  they’re quite a sight.  it’s almost like we’re a different species when we board an aircraft.  you see people in this raw, emotional state.  some of us feel entitled.  some of us get emotional.  some of us panic.  some of us become annoyed.  but whoever we are, we find ourselves surrounded by strangers with whom we are creating a unique and unrepeatable bond.  there’s this experience that, for however long or short a time, is connecting us all, uniting each of us as we sail through the air to our many futures.  quite a perspective, yes?

i write to you tonight from a b757-200(n) bound for texas.  i’ve got a chatty smoker to my right and a crewcut gentleman to my left.  she, i could do without.  he, he might be fun company for the next hour and 38 minutes.  the lady in front of me has clearly boarded the plane in quite a state.  she’s obviously stressed and out of breath.  i so hope she had to run to catch the plane!  i love watching people who are running for a bus or train or flight.  i have been that person many times, so i will gladly enjoy a smile at their expense.  but only if they make it!  if they miss it, it’s just sad.

we’ve got a 12 year-old boy pouting over his mother, someone’s dog yipping and yapping, and now, oh no.  the guy to my left will not stop fidgeting and whistling.  i wouldn’t normally mind, but i cannot escape it!  there’s nowhere i can go!  perhaps he’ll tire himself out before too long.  yes, yes, keep fidgeting and whistling, sir.  i dare you.

writing and reading and writing some more as i am aboard this flight is almost a form of entertainment in itself.  good thing i think i’m pretty funny!  (no comments, please.)

uh oh.  now the smoker is engaging me in conversation.  please, can you not see me engrossed in my writing?  my imagination is soaring above the skyline as we take off, and i only wish i were destined for some place new and exotic, some place tropical or scenic or foreign…yes, any of those would do just fine.

as we climb to 10,000 feet, i rest my head and at least close my eyes for a few.  i wouldn’t say i’m tired, but i’m fine with the day winding down soon.  the whistler has crept out of this personal space just a tad, and our knees and elbows are resting on one another.  i couldn’t really scoot myself any more to the right, but i find that i don’t really mind.  were i more tired, i might have even snuggled up next to him.  okay, this all sounds odd.  let me clarify:  i do not go around town  looking for strangers who will snuggle with me.  all i’m saying is that this little bit of human touch felt nice.  if you’re judging me, then you’re only denying the fact that you agree.  if you’re laughing at me, please go on.  i find myself to be quite humorous as well.

ah, and now he slumbers so peacefully and quietly.  i knew the fidgeting and whistling would wear him out!  it’s as if i can tell the future.  it’s as though i know what is going to happen.  it’s like i’m making it all up in my head to entertain myself.  yep, definitely the latter of them all.

whenever i travel, i always wonder about the people i see.  where are they going?  where are they from?  what do they do?  what is their story?  i like to paint their pictures myself, because i’m not always in the mood to dive deep with a stranger.  we’ll say the whistler is a military man.  i make this assumption merely on his demeanor and tattoos.  the smoker to my right?  she’s a divorcee, her kids are out of college, and she’s reluctantly traveling this week for work.  see?  wasn’t that fun?  now you try!

we’re cruising along at 38,000 feet, storms to our left but sunshine as far as i can see.  speaking of seeing, i’ve always been curious to know what the sky looks like from the captain’s seat.  just breathtaking horizons that stretch on forever.  i bet it is quite a view.  actually, a view i would love to have, but probably never will, is one from outer space.  wouldn’t it be a magnificent thing, to see the curve of the earth with your own eyes?  our planet in all its majesty?  actually, you want to know the real reason i want to see the earth from space?  because i still think it’s flat.  kidding!  i’m totally joking!  i had you for a moment, though, didn’t i?  you can say yes.  i’ll accept that answer.

i pause here to not apologize but rather thank you for sticking around through this flight with me.  my mind gets off track sometimes, hurtling itself down a new rabbit hole before finding the end of the first one.  can i loosely compare it to stream of consciousness?  why, yes.  yes, i can.

something i despise about planes is the alarmingly distinct scent of the recycled air.  it smells like nothing else and sometimes even gives me a headache.  anyone else out there know what i mean?  and speaking of unpleasant smells, i am convinced someone just cut the cheese.  take that stink to the bathroom, man!  i do not need to know what your personal brand smells like.

ah, just ahead is the drink and snack cart, that 5,000 pound rolling dresser of sustenance.  okay, i know it doesn’t weight 5,000 pounds, but that thing is heavy.  they’ve got some serious brakes to keep it in place.  what should i get tonight?  a glass of champagne?  some chilled pinot grigio?  hardly.  i’ll probably end up with orange juice like always.  yep, orange juice it is.  not too heavy and just enough to hold me over until i land, because you know once i land, grab my luggage, and zoom away in my rental that i’ll be stopping at in-n-out for a milkshake.  it’ll definitely be chocolate, and it’s going to be the perfect treat for the end of the day’s journey.

we eventually begin our descent into dallas, and the captain has so kindly informed us that it’s a toasty 92 degrees outside.  oh, yeah, i’m definitely going to be wanting that milkshake when i arrive…

a feeding frenzy – dallas, tx

i’ve recently spent time in dallas, texas for work, and although we have been keeping quite busy, we always find time for a good meal.  cranky consultants are not happy consultants.

dallas is quite the foodie town, and i feel like we’ve done a decent job of exploring it.  of course, i wouldn’t be opposed to a return trip to find and try even more local spots.

these restaurants are presented in no particular order.  and i am warning you now, we did a lot of eating.

mexico – day 3

our final day arrived!  and i was looking quite forward to doing a lot of relaxing, as it was our one and only day at sea.  i rolled out of bed, and we met everyone on the upper deck for a little breakfast.  as we were chomping down on handmade omelettes and bacon and fruit, the emcee from the dance floor announced that music trivia would be starting shortly.  music trivia?  we should be able to dominate!  ali went to get our answer sheet and pencil, and we all waited as the questions were asked.  there were a total of 20 questions, and we answered 14 correctly!  we soon found out that we were the trivia winners, which of course is deserving of some kind of reward.  i suppose on a cruise ship there’s only so much they can give away, so we walked away with a sweet trophy replica of the carnival imagination.  go team!

just a few minutes later, bingo was being hosted in the grand theatre, so there was no time to lose.  uncle jeff, aunt cindy, milo, ali, and i trotted downstairs, bought our bingo sheets, and settled in for some good ole’ fashioned fun.  the host was a hoot, and although none of us got the chance to yell “bingo!” during the game, a couple of us walked away with a few bucks with our scratch-off cards.

bingo!

bingo!

after two exhilarating activities, i was ready to bum around.  i joined uncle craig and aunt janie back on the upper deck.  the sun had finally broken through the overcast morning, hooray!  i lathered on the spf 30 sunscreen, adjusted the beach chair, and closed my eyes to just be.  the weather was as beautiful as it was when we arrived, and i honestly could just not get over it.  what a treat!

we enjoyed vodka lemonades and some snacks throughout the afternoon.  at some point, people-watching just could not be avoided, as the dj was hosting a party out on the dance floor.  at least they played some iggy azalea, my jam!  i only wish we had one more day out here!

as the late afternoon turned into the early evening, we gathered our things to spruce up for the night.  as i got changed, i realized my sunscreen “lathering” wasn’t quite as thorough as i had thought.  i had some sweet tan lines, and my face was quite red.  nothing like a little natural sunshine on those cheeks, right?  sure…

the theme this evening for dinner was nautical, so blues and reds and stripes were perfectly in order.  erin even brought captain and sailor hats for us all to don!  aren’t we just the most adorable bunch?  everyone else thought so, as we were receiving the sweetest compliments throughout the night.

our final meal together was really quite lovely, and i had to push out the thought that it would be a few months before i would see everyone again for my brother’s wedding.  “stay in the moment!” i told myself, and that is just what i did.  we reminisced on our favorite moments with uncle craig and aunt janie, the guests of honor, and indulged one last time.

after finishing our desserts, we quickly made our way port side to the comedy show.  although the comedian was a bit inappropriate, we were laughing the whole half hour he was up there.  sometimes things are funny because they’re true, and sometimes they’re even funnier when we call them out and make fun of them.  at least the crowd had a good sense of humor for him!

we cousins weren’t ready for the night to end just yet, for that meant the vacation was coming to an end soon, too.  it just so happened that some of the crew members were hosting an 80’s throwback concert onboard, the perfect distraction for us.  sara, ali, kate, brian, and i danced and sang along to michael jackson and eddie money and many other fabulous bands.  although i was right on the verge of all-night raging, we all silently consented that it was time for the night to end as the band began to pack up.  it is always too soon, yes?  well, that is what they say when you are having fun.
